MySQL database market share up 25% in last two years

25 March, 2007

MySQL has gained 25% market share in overall database usage by developers in the last two years, according to data drawn from a range of recent multi-client surveys published by Evans Data Corporation, a vendor-neutral third-party market research firm. The data shows 40% database usage by developers, up from 32% two years earlier. Evans Data Corp. noted that with more and more developers using Open Source (65% in North America in Fall 2006), usage of MySQL is projected to continue to increase in the future.

"We continue to see the maturation of open-source databases reflected by the continually increasing levels of adoption," said John Andrews, President, Evans Data Corporation. "In an increasing number of our ratings categories, we're seeing open-source databases meeting or exceeding proprietary databases."

Evans Data said that the broad acceptance of MySQL can be attributed to the rapid overall adoption of the LAMP stack. Among developers in enterprise organizations, four out of ten report that they use an open source database within their operations. More than two thirds of Open Source developers (69%) are very satisfied with the Open Source database options on the market today
