Storage vendor Nimbus Data Systems is offering its own free software, MySAN, which allows enterprises to create an IP SAN on their existing server and storage hardware.

The software is aimed at small and medium sized enterprises that rely on Windows servers, stated Thomas Isakovich, CEO and founder of Nimbus.

Some people have been wary about adopting iSCSI because it is relatively new, compared to Fibre Channel, he stated.

"They don't need to buy new hardware; they can actually use just a plain old vanilla server or Windows server that they already have."

MySAN works by turning any Windows partition --- such as a hard drive, internal RAID array, external storage system, or even Fibre Channel storage -- into an iSCSI target, Isakovich explained.

In addition, he continued, the storage can then be assigned to any computer on an Ethernet network using iSCSI.

Isakovich described IP SAN as a more user friendly alternative to Fibre Channel, which he stated "is a whole other beast" in terms of being "a complex and not widely understood technology."

Also, IP SAN will work with different brands of storage hardware, unlike Fibre Channel, he noted.

Currently, San Francisco based Nimbus Software is seeking to expand its channel base in North America, Europe and beyond -- now at about 35 in the US -- to carry its Breeze storage hardware products.

Isakovich described Breeze as a storage array that combines both IT SAN functionality with full NAS functionality in a single storage system.

MySAN is free software without usage limitations and the user is not obliged to buy anything from Nimbus again, he stated.

However, Isakovich anticipated that end users will be enticed to consider Breeze if they like MySAN. The Breeze storage products start at about $20,000, (U.S.) in terms of pricing.
