Coyote Point introduces new Gigabit application switch
26 February, 2007 By Liam Lahey |

Coyote Point Systems Inc. has announced its new enterprise-class Equalizer Series E550si, a server load balancing and application traffic management system that integrates a best-of-breed feature set for Web application delivery in a 21-port Gigabit Ethernet switch configuration.
The E550si -- targeted at the small to medium enterprise space -- has most of the bells and whistles and high-end performance of comparable systems from rivals such as F5 Networks, Cisco, and other vendors, and at approximately $10,000 (U.S.), comes at a fraction of the price.
The company also said the E550si is intended to drive mainstream adoption of server load balancing and application traffic management delivered through resellers, VARs, and systems integrators.
"Load balancing and application traffic management is all we do. Our products are like a traffic cop, directing traffic but on servers," explained Jack Irving, vice president of sales for San Jose, Calif.-based Coyote Point Systems. "Load balancing is the most efficient way to manage that traffic and channel it so information and clients are directed to specific servers.
"We provide 100 per cent of what 80 per cent of the market wants."
The Equalizer E550si is capable of supporting 512 servers per virtual cluster, with unlimited clusters, and up to 100,000 connections per second. Other features in Coyote Point's flagship Equalizer E550si include SNMP support with alerts, dynamic ports for complex network applications such as those used in ERP and CRM systems, full NAT functionality and support for internationalized websites.
"When you're considering enterprise-class load balancing from other vendors such as F5 or Cisco, you're paying a lot for that feature set and it has limited market potential," Irving continued. "Those products are not at a sensible price point.
"Our global channel partners asked us for an affordable application switch with high port density to enable server consolidation, virtualization and clustering solutions and managed services across the board."
The Coyote Point E550si is an enterprise-class Layer 4-7 load balancing and application traffic management switch with 21 Gigabit Ethernet ports and enterprise-class features, such as:
*Enterprise SNMP MIB for interoperability with leading network management systems that covers hundreds of Equalizer performance and configuration parameters. In addition to information that can be polled from the system, Equalizer systems can generate SNMP traps to alert on critical events such as when servers become unavailable.
*Dynamic ports for complex network applications such as those used in some ERP and CRM systems that require multiple network ports to be open. Network administrators can associate groups of contiguous ports to a single group of servers.
*Full NAT functionality enables a full-proxy option that originates all new connections from the system's IP address and enables effortless, trouble-free installation and enhanced security.
*Support for internationalized websites that use extended character sets.
*Optional functionality includes Coyote Point's Xcel SSL acceleration and Envoy global server load balancing.
Coyote Point's Equalizer E550si in a 21-port Gigabit Ethernet switch configuration suggested retail price is $10,995, the company said.
"Coyote Point is a trusted partner with top-notch people who know server load balancing and application traffic management inside and out," said Mike Lauth, president and CEO of iXsystems, a provider of high-performance computing clusters and an authorized Coyote Point VAR in North America, in a statement.
