Use trials to grow your IAM business
12 November, 2007 By Mark Rieger, Managing Director, ProAmericas |

IDC reports that total worldwide revenue for Identity and Access Management (IAM) reached almost $3 billion in 2006 and is forecast to reach more than $4.9 billion by 2011 (July 2007).
"With increased attention on compliance and the financial risk of compromising sensitive customer and company data, two—factor authentication has become a must—have technology for corporate and government organizations, and for many small to mid—size enterprises in the financial, healthcare, education, manufacturing, and government sectors," said Stuart Rauch, director of product marketing, Secure Computing's IAM & SafeWord.
With an increasingly mobile workforce and remote access at an all—time high, IT administrators have to ensure employees can get access to email, Web applications and data, without putting network resources and corporate assets at risk, he said. "Passwords are just too easy to hack, borrow, guess or steal. Two—factor authentication, and in particular tokens, are a proven answer to this problem."
For solution providers who are looking to introduce this technology to their customers, or replace what they already have with a more cost—effective solution, Secure Computing offers an inexpensive 5—user Starter Pack, which is easy to install and is tightly integrated with Microsoft Active Directory, Citrix Applications, the most popular VPNs and access gateways, and Web applications.
Access to a secure network begins with proof of user identity. The vulnerabilities of traditional static passwords are well—documented, and passwords have been proven to be inadequate as an identity credential. Two—factor authentication utilizes tokens with one—time passcodes to provide secure remote access for mobile workers. These solutions provide access management and control by confirming user identity and providing protection of data resources and assistance with achieving regulatory compliance. Now the mobile workforce has a secure mechanism to protect user identity and remote access logins.
SafeWord is Secure Computing's leading two—factor authentication solution, providing proof—positive user identity for all types of remote access gateways, including Citrix Access Gateway and Presentation Server, Outlook Web Access, and popular VPNs such as Cisco, Checkpoint, Juniper, Aventail, F5, Nortel and other RADIUS devices.
SafeWord products are designed to fit easily into an organization's existing Microsoft Windows infrastructure with the least amount of impact. This means reduced implementation time and ongoing management costs. Many organizations already use Microsoft Active Directory (AD) as part of their identity infrastructure. IT administrators can simply plug SafeWord into the existing Active Directory to instantly administer and deploy tokens with tools they already use and know. SafeWord can be installed on a domain controller for Active Directory in as little as 20 minutes. You don't even have to use a separate server.
"The tokens themselves are a very important consideration," said Rauch. "Unlike competitors' tokens, which expire and have to be replaced, some in as few as three years, SafeWord tokens never expire, which significantly reduces the total cost of ownership."
In 2004, a large healthcare network in the Midwestern United States utilized a major competitor's secure identity tokens. The healthcare organization had around 3,500 tokens in use. However, it had encountered a problem. Their 3,500 tokens were expiring after three years-and the health network was staring at a capital expense of $210,000 to repurchase tokens. Its staff referred to this as "programmed obsolescence" and began to search for alternatives. In addition, many of the IT staff were unhappy with the token vendor's technology. One member of the IT staff called the vendor's time—synchronous technology "problematic," citing very high help—desk costs. He also pointed out limitations and inflexibility of the server's fixed password support, which was causing significant problems in one of the health care network's business units.
As the organization began to look at other options, SafeWord® PremierAccess® strong authentication system from Secure Computing Corporation quickly rose to the top of the list for multiple reasons. First of all, the total cost of ownership for SafeWord was far less than the existing solution. Repurchasing those tokens would cost $210,000 every three years. By replacing them with SafeWord tokens, the organization calculated a five—year costs savings of over $330,000! They also estimated significant additional help—desk cost savings due to SafeWord's "event—synchronous" technology.
Although it may seem daunting to pull out an existing infrastructure system, the health care network believed the cost savings justified it. An evaluation system was put in place, and it quickly exceeded the health network's expectations. The IT staff found the interface "solid, flexible, and easy to work with." SafeWord also offered advanced features to make migration painless, including the Authentication Broker-allowing users to be gradually migrated, and flexible Web—based user self enrollment- allowing users to switch authenticators at a convenient time of their choosing.
SafeWord provides a wide range of authentication options including passcode—generating tokens, software tokens for laptops and mobile phones, and support for digital certificates, smart cards, biometrics, and proximity devices.
MobilePass® is a software—based two—factor authentication solution that generates one—time passcodes right on a mobile phone or laptop/desktop PC. The product works on a wide range of mobile phone platforms, including BlackBerry, Palm, Windows Mobile, and J2ME—enabled devices and is also available for Windows Desktops, where one—time passcodes are generated right on the laptop or desktop PC.
Secure Computing offers unique solutions for easily deploying tokens to users, including User Self—Enrollment, which can save hours of administrative time - and in many cases, 80% or more off the administrative costs of enrolling users. SafeWord products include an embedded Enrollment Center and user self—enrollment capability. The Enrollment Center can also be used to deploy digital certificates, software authenticators, VPN client software, or even custom software, directly to end users
"For solution providers, getting customers to try the technology must be quick, easy and inexpensive," says Rauch. "We will make our 5—User Starter Packs available at low cost so solution providers can deploy tokens in their own environment, and then out to their customers. IT administrators can evaluate it themselves and then give it to their company executives to see how easily it works. Once they see how easy it is, they can expand the pilot with a larger set of 100 people, and then ultimately to all remote users. We have a number of channel—friendly promotions that make it easier for solution providers to seed the market with this technology, spiffs for sales reps and a trade—out incentive program for RSA customers."
Solution providers can take advantage of these opportunities by going to Alternative Technology. Secure Computing's specialty value—added distributor has developed a Web site that is dedicated to solution providers and their education and enablement, including links to white papers, Webinars, demos, promotions, and training opportunities.
