Adobe has released the first update to its LiveCycle Enterprise Suite, which first launched in June, 2007. Update 1 adds two new solutions components, LiveCycle Content Services ES and LiveCycle PDF Generator 3D ES, as well as enhancements to installation, administration, application development and end-user experiences.

LiveCycle Content Services ES is designed to help enterprises rapidly develop and deploy content-rich applications. Features include content storage, versioning, check-in/check-out, collaboration, advanced classification, search, archival and user interfaces including a web client, Microsoft Office plug-ins and shared network folders.

The addition of Content Services ES makes LiveCycle ES the only suite on the market that blends, data capture, information assurance, document output, process management and content services, giving customers the means to deliver rich applications where content can be created, stored, searched, managed, rights-protected and archived.

According to Adobe, Adobe will continue to develop relationships with ECM vendors with the addition of LiveCycle Content Services ES, which will enable customers to leverage their existing ECM investments for managing content as part of their LiveCycle content-centric engagement applications.

The second new component, PDF Generator 3D ES is a server-based solution that can be centrally deployed across the enterprise to manage the creation, assembly, distribution and archiving of engineering design data from multiple file formats, including CAD drawings, into a single PDF document that can be shared through Adobe Reader.

A key component of PDF Generator 3D ES is its ability to make collaboration more secure. OEMs and suppliers are now able to protect their intellectual property by avoiding having to share unprotected native CAD files outside the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) environment. Manufacturers can control access and modification permissions to data inside or outside the firewall, and control the accuracy of data stored in PDF to reduce risk of designs being used by their competitors.

With LiveCycle ES Update 1, we give customers the ability to deliver content-rich engagement applications faster through a fully integrated set of content services, said Rob Tarkoff, Senior Vice President, Business Productivity Business Unit at Adobe. This release enriches Adobes LiveCycle technology platform with new capabilities and productivity enhancements for customers to deliver applications that reduce paperwork, accelerate decision-making, and help ensure regulatory compliance."

In addition to the two new solutions components, Update 1 also adds support for the newest versions of Adobe applications, including Adobe Reader 9, Acrobat 9, Flex 3, and Adobe AIR. As well, LiveCycle Rights Management ES now enables users to policy-protect PowerPoint and Pro/ENGINEER files, in addition to PDF, Excel, Word, CATIA, XVL and Flash Video files.

Key enhancements to process and form design include:

  • Record and playback for debugging LiveCycle applications as theyre executed on the server.
  • Process validation for ensuring processes are well formed before deploying them to the server.
  • Ease of use enhancements for rapidly locating commonly used services.
  • Advanced typographic controls for improving control over text formatting through pair kerning, horizontal and vertical scaling, letter spacing, and dot leaders.
  • Tab border authoring improvements, including a new interface for creating tab order.
  • Hyphenation control on form text and data.
  • Ability to embed live hyperlinks into interactive forms or dynamic documents.

Key enhancements in the LiveCycle ES Foundation include:

  • Scripted deployment, for automating and maintaining applications from development and staging to production.
  • Enhanced Backup and restore services to better support 24x7 environments.
  • User management enhancements. Provides support for single sign-on, MS Active Directory referral, Domino LDAP, and other services.
  • JMX support for easily monitoring LiveCycle ES applications using third-party tools.

Adobe also announced two Solution Accelerators: Enrollment Solution Accelerator and Correspondence Management Solution Accelerator, which address the needs of financial services correspondence management, financial services new account enrolment, and government services & benefits delivery.

These solution accelerators address the marketplace trend for pre-built solutions to help customers simplify projects and increase the quality of the applications. The Accelerators will be available to download in summer of 2008 from Adobe.com's Developer Center and will be free to customers and partners when used with LiveCycle ES.

According to Adobe, Update 1 is expected to become available in July. LiveCycle Content Services ES component is priced at $25,000 per CPU, or $125 per user with a minimum of 100 users. LiveCycle PDF Generator 3D ES component (which includes LiveCycle PDF Generator ES) will cost $60,000 per CPU, or $300 per user with a maximum of 100 users.
