Since being acquired by Arrow ECS, a business segment of Arrow Electronics, in November of 2006, Alternative Technology has seen greater opportunities in being together than if the distributor were still on its own, according to Bill Botti, Alt Tech president and COO.

"Because Alt Tech has been focused on software and solutions associated with software, we never sold servers or storage or things like that, so by partnering with Arrow through the acquisition we have access to their big enterprise VARs who sell tons of servers and storage which all of our enterprise software has gone on," said Botti. "I think it is the great synergies between the organizations that are one of the things that have helped foster the growth that we've seen over the last two years."

He added that Arrow has also benefited in acquiring Alt Tech.

"We saw significant opportunities for us to sell software to their product portfolio of VARs and we've seen their product portfolio of VARs adding our software to their product lines," said Botti.

Helping Alt Tech's growth is also the recent distribution agreement that the company signed with NComputing Inc., a provider of ultra-low-cost computing, that sees Alt Tech distribute NComputing's X-series and L-series virtual desktops to resellers in North America.

"In the virtual space we have a broad portfolio there and it addresses both application and desktop virtualization and that's been one of our forte so we think that the very low cost entry point that they bring fits extremely well in these economic times," Botti noted.

He added that NComputing targeting the low-end helps Alt Tech have a solution in that area in their product portfolio that was previously missing.

NComputing's products enable a single computer to be virtualized and shared between several users to significantly maximize capacity without inhibiting each user's individual computing needs. The X-series virtual desktop solution from NComputing uses one watt of electricity, compared to 110 watts for each computer. The L-series connects across a standard Ethernet local-area network for users that are more than 10 meters away from the shared computer. The solutions have been deployed by businesses, factories, call centers, hospitals, retailers, schools and government agencies.

"Alternative Technology brings significant channel and market reach in commercial virtualization and thin-client markets, a strong customer service focus and a reputation for providing leading solutions," said Stephen Dukker, chief executive officer and chairman of NComputing, in a statement. "As enterprise users increasingly adopt our technology to reduce their capital and operating costs by as much as 70 per cent, Alternative Technology will prove to be a valuable partner in supporting resellers that serve enterprise users."
