ScaleMP, which makes virtualization solutions for high-end computing, has announced an addition to its vSMP Foundation product line, vSMP Foundation for Cloud. The new solution enables dynamic, on-the-fly provisioning of x86 servers into larger SMP virtual systems. This enables the provisioning and re-provisioning of large virtual-machine resources within existing cloud infrastructure, creating true cloud elasticity and drastically cutting costs.

vSMP Foundation for Cloud, the third solution in ScaleMP's inventory, offers flexible, on-demand creation of virtual machines on a per job, per project or per customer basis. The solution eliminates the need to deploy dedicated end-of-the-isle shared memory systems, allowing for real-time deployment of virtual large memory systems aggregated from cloud resources and redeployment back to the compute grid upon completion of application or batch jobs.

"We use virtualization the opposite way from companies like VMware," said Shai Fultheim, founder and president of ScaleMP. "We take multiple servers and aggregate them into one, the opposite of what they do. It means just one machine to manage, which is so much easier. That's our core technology, and it plays in different parts of the market."

High performance computing has gone through a dramatic change in the last 3-5 years," Fultheim said.

"It's not just government and universities any more. Applications became commodity applications, so anyone trying to do statistical analysis, weather simulation, genomic sequencing in pharmas will be interested. The price points are great. The problem is managing this. So we virtualize that into one big machine."

vSMP Foundation for Cloud features on-demand provisioning and re-provisioning of SMP systems for cloud infrastructure leveraging existing provisioning infrastructure, seamless integration with systems management and provisioning tools, support for any programming model (serial, throughput, multi-threaded or large-memory) without machine boundary, and aggregation of up to 16 x86 servers to create virtual SMP with up to 128 cores and 4 TB of main memory utilizing Intel's latest generation Nehalem processors.

ScaleMP's sales are 100% channel, although they are adding a direct e commerce element for low end sales.

"Customers who just want to buy a few servers, we find our- channel doesn't really care about these small deals," Fultheim said. "What we are doing with this ecommerce site is sell the software directly for these small deals. We hope to see accelerated growth in that part of the market."

vSMP Foundation for Cloud is currently available in beta, and will be generally available on December 1, 2009.
