Storage vendor Nexsan has announced that it has released the Nexsan DeDupe SG 2.0 with high-speed redundant appliances designed for data protection and disaster recovery applications that require high-performance deduplication. The product of a strategic venture between Nexsan and FalconStor, the SG ("Speed with Green) 2.0 integrates new FalconStor FDS 2.0 software to increase speed by 200 percent and provides automatic application failover.

"We released the original platform in the summer of 2009," said Bob Woolery, senior vice president of marketing for Nexsan. "Now we are combining high performance de dupe with Falconstor's software to take it to another level in terms of efficiency and cost."

The FalconStor addition is version 2.0 of its File-interface Deduplication System( FDS) which introduces several new capabilities.

"The first is high availability, and this is the first solution in this industry to provide such an offering," said Fadi Albatal, vice president of product marketing for FalconStor. "The other big thing is new support from Symantec to improve the performance." Integrated Symantec OST (OpenStorage) support improves performance over 100% when using 10Gbit interfaces.

"The Symantec support allows providing higher speed protocols for backup applications, doubling dedupe speed to 1500 MB per second," Albatal said. "Integration with OST also allows one single point of management."

Improved replication now supports up to 150 remote sites, with improved enterprise features including enhanced folder level granularity and real-time animated dashboard to monitor all operations.

The Nexsan DeDupe SG 2.0 also saves on energy costs by leveraging the green capabilities inherent in Nexsans AutoMAID technology, which transparently places disk drives into their most energy-efficient state without affecting backup performance.

"You can select the energy saving level you like," Woolery said. "Level 1 unloads the heads to save up to 20%, and the vast majority never notice a delay. Level 2 [SATA only] reduces RPM speed to save up to 40% and Level 3 puts the drive in light sleep to save up to 60%."

"The beauty here is he gain in performance while maintaining energy efficiency," Woolery added.

The co-branded deduplication solution will be available in late February, and will be sold through Nexsan's channel as a single SKU turnkey system, with a single point of support. It will be marketed by both Nexsan and FalconStor Seven models are available for all parts of the SME space, ranging from the DDSG-4, with 4 TB of repository capacity, to the DDSG-72.
